From Dada to Surrealism - JHM Amsterdam 01.06.11 - 02.10.11
(Amsterdam, 31.05.11) A magnificent exhibition of Jewish avant-garde artists from Romania opened at the Jewish Historical Museum (JHM), Amsterdam on 1 June 2011: From Dada to Surrealism, with more than seventy artworks from the period 1910-1938. Most of these works have never been on display before in the Netherlands, or anywhere outside Romania. I am so enthusiastic about the pioneering creativity of the artists and the exceptional quality of the exhibited artworks, that I would strongly encourage you not to miss this unique exhibition running until 2 October 2011.
From the outstanding multilingual JHM Virtual Exhibition we learn: "In the early decades of the twentieth century, the art world was taken by storm by the fearless experimentalism of several Jewish artists from Romania: Tristan Tzara (1895-1962), Victor Brauner (1903-1966), Marcel Janco (1895-1984), and M. H. Maxy (1895-1971). They and the older Romanian artist Arthur Segal (1875-1944) were present at the birth of an influential avant-garde movement. The younger artists Jules Perahim (1914-2008) and Paul Păun (1915-1994), inspired by their predecessors, were at the forefront of Surrealism. Dadaist, Surrealist, abstract, and expressionistic works, personal variations on Constructivism – nothing went too far for them."

Many wonderful works of art by truly phenomenal artists. Perhaps my favorite is this later surrealist "suitcase" painting, small 9cmx10cm oil on canvas, by Victor Brauner: "Composition with Portrait:
