Gomorrha • Naples (2,380 km)

(Naples, 16.06.2025-19.06.2025) I admit that I came to Naples as a set-jetter in search of the filming locations for the successful Italian series "Gomorrah". The series, which has been sold in over 130 countries, provides realistic and magnificent images of the inner workings of the Neapolitan Camorra. The 18th century Palazzo Sanfelice is one of the locations, as is the Vele de Scampia [Sails of Scampia] in the problem district of Secondigliano. I arrived not a day too early, as the demolition work on the residential complex has already begun. Even the oversized slogan on one of the high-rise buildings, "Not we are the problem!" will soon be reduced to rubble. Decay, crime, mismanagement, poverty and much more - feelings of inferiority are inevitable. What better way to counteract this than through sporting success? And Diego Armando Maradona, who moved to SSC Napoli in 1984/85, brought them. The team went on to achieve the greatest triumphs of his club career, including the club's first league titles in 1987 and 1990 as well as winning the UEFA Cup in 1989. The two underdogs, Napoli and Maradona, formed a symbiotic relationship from then on. "The God of the Neapolitans" is still omnipresent here. There is still a small niche for the Virgin Mary in the stairwell of my apartment in Via Luigi Palmieri 14.
