Brutalist Architecture in Satu Mare (2,316 km)

(2023-05-29/30) At the entrance to Satu Mare there are again trilingual village entrance signs, this time in Romanian, Hungarian and German. Satu Mare translates as Big Village, and that pretty much sums it up. The municipality advertises with the slogan "Sathmar. More than You think." Not an empty promise, and just as ambivalent as the cityscape that presents itself to the unsuspecting visitor. Satu Mare has gained worldwide fame for the architecture around the Palace of Administration, an outstanding example of Brutalist Architecture. The web portal #SOSBRUTALISM sees parallels to the star architects Le Corbusier and Paul Rudolph. In this architectural context, the Great Synagogue from 1889 looks quite lost. On another billboard we read: „Together we bring color to the city.“
