(2022-05-10/13) No, I didn’t intend to enter today's Transnistria, an outlaw separatist region that has not been recognized by the UN nor any state in the world, not even by Russia. So I rely on Wikipedia & Co. and I‘m riding to Bender/Tighina. Oops, roadblocks outside the city gates? What happened, Bender/Tighina is on THIS side of the Dniester and the separatists name their „state“ Trans- but not Cisnistria?
At the border crossing, without realzing it, I already passed the demarcation line, where ONE lonely Moldavian soldier was standing; 50 meters further there were already twice as many troops, TWO Russian soldiers in full uniform, armed and with Russian sovereignty insignia on the territory of the Republic of Moldova...?! Unfortunately the soldiers are camera-shy, precisely their officers, but nevertheless extremely friendly and see themselves as peacekeepers. We all know what this peace is all about. I am not giving up so easily and drive to the next village (Vârnița) and to the Dniester, which flows along picturesquely and peacefully, what else?
Back in Chișinău we take a closer look at the Jewish Cemetery, the Monument to Ghetto Prisoners and the (remains of the) Rabbi Yehuda Leib Tsirelson Synagogue.
